3) Primacy of nature: Emerson’s nature is the garment of the over-soul, symbolic and moral-bound. Nature is not something purely of the matter, but alive with God’s overwhelming presence. Besides, it exercises a healthy and restorative influence on human beings. Children are considered to see nature better than adults.

23. Henry James——心理现实主义代表人物
International theme
It is the meeting of America and Europe, American innocence in contact and contrast with European decadence and the moral and psychological complications.
It is usually presented as the American moral innocence with the decadence of Europe. he Europeans are often regarded as over-refined, degenerate and artificial by Americans, and the Americans were considered naive, vulgar and ignorant by many Europeans.
His fictions are filled with American heroes and heroines who confronting European sophistication, either triumphed over it or were overwhelmed. Daisy Miller is a story of a young girl from NY who goes to Rome and then withers and dies in Rome

Psychological realism
He believed that reality lies in the impressions made by life on the spectator, and not in any facts of which the spectator is unaware. So realism is only the thing that the writer represents as he sees it, and this may not be the same as life as it “really” is. By emphasizing psychological realism, James shifted the ground of realistic art from the outer to the inner world.

Multiple point of view
To correspond to life, Henry James believes that the author should avoid artificial omniscience as much as possible.
He used a particular method of telling the story through one or several minds, so one can observe events and people through the consciousness of his characters.
James emphasizes the inner awareness and inward movements of his characters in face of outside occurrences rather than merely delineating their environment in any detail.

24. American Naturalism
Thematically, naturalistic writers
-- made detailed descriptions of the lives of the downtrodden and of the abnormal
-- had frank treatment of human passion and sexuality
-- were concerned about how men and women were overwhelmed by the forces of environment and by the forces of heredity
Technically, naturalistic writers
-- made detailed documentation of life: nothing but the truth, more naked and wicked than realism
-- created gloomy and pessimistic atmosphere
